August De Puysseleir

Belgium

De Puysseleir August (°1958, Antwerp) When my father died at the young age of 42, I took a job as a 15-year-old apprentice in a photo-engraving studio. Shortly after I had to deal with depression, addiction and manic periods that resulted in a breakdown. I subsequently had to give up the profession I loved. The situation got out of control. Drug addiction and poverty took over my life. After 35 years of drug abuse, I decided 15 years ago to make the vital switch. The psychiatrist who guided my rehabilitation referred me to Kunsthuis Yellow Art, an artistic studio open for mentally vulnerable people. Ever since art became my cure I can call myself a self-taught artist, always searching for new artistic encounters. DPA.

The artists' stories

"The Vibrant Mind" is an art contest that celebrates artistic expression from individuals with mental health conditions. By focusing on the artists' work rather than their various diagnoses, it hopes to promote a stigma-free and inclusive environment.

That being said, the participants were given the option to share their background stories if they wished to do so.
